INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE LEARNING IN BORNEO 2021
Since 2016, the students, faculty, and staff members of Cornell University, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) embarked on the journey of learning, experimenting, and experiencing what is service-Learning, and community-based research with their community partners Long Lamai, Machan, and Bawang Assan villages of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. Five years later, the partner communities and organizations hosted four cohorts of university students. UNIMAS and UCTS have established Service-Learning programs integrated into their academic coursework.
Because of the global pandemics, the partners decided to pause and reflect on the strength of the partnership. We, therefore, invite you to reflect critically and systematically with us at the Community-Based Service- Learning Conference. The Conference highlights cross-cultural, cross- national, and interdisciplinary learning gained through the partnership of the three academic institutions, Cornell University, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, University College of Technology Sarawak, and their community partners, Long Lamai, Bawang Assan, and Machan. The Conference provides students, faculty members, and community partners opportunities for engaging in reflective dialogues on the process, learning, and experience of service- learning partnership. The presenters will share and invite discussion with participants on the existing frameworks for community-based service- learning. The speakers will also reflect upon how academia, students, and community members can learn together continuously across diverse knowledge systems. The Conference will be of value for those interested in or working on domestic or global service-learning partnerships, including university faculty and students, university administrators, community leaders, policymakers, and organizations and agencies that can support service- learning.
